VAT Return — View invoice numbers
Could the VAT transactions report in the VAT return include the invoice number as well as or instead of the reference?
This would make the review to see if there are any missing invoice numbers much simpler. Our invoices are created in another software package by a number of people who sometimes include text as well as the invoice number and it makes sorting by numerical order time consuming. Having the invoice number as a field would make it very easy to sort in numerical order and identify missing numbers.

GST - Filter by tracking to report on multiple branches from a single org
Per the attached screenshot, we are utilising tracking categories to track income and expenditure for two branches of a business with one ABN. Most of the reports can be filtered between tracking categories. I can see no reason that the GST reports should not be able to be filtered by tracking category, or even the Activity Statement report. We should be able to expect this filtering for ABN branches.

Tax - Ability to calculate and report tax for multiple jurisdictions
GST - where an entity trades in different tax jurisdictions, allow the file to create the ability to manage GST for different countries (different GST codes) in separate GST accounts and not all consolidated into one GST account.
eg if an entity trades in Australia and New Zealand, you can have an Australian GST account and a NZ GST account to make reconciliation and completion of BAS easier.18 votes -
GST - Enable AIM tax method
Enable AIM tax method for NZ
This is needed for small businesses in NZ to do their own AIM lodgement automatically via Xero without using an accountant. In the GST return, there are three options currently; Standard, Estimate, and Ratio but not AIM. The whole purpose of AIM is to smooth cashflow and make it simpler for small businesses to file one return for both GST and Income Tax at the same time, but it appears this option is not available to us! Please vote for this to be included ASAP as an option.11 votes -
CIS - Verify Subcontractor without specifying CIS rate
Using the new Contracts form, when verifying a subcontractor, you are now asked to enter the CIS Tax Rate (Gross, 20% or 30%) before you verify the subcontractor.
You cannot save and verify with HMRC unless this field is completed. Without verification, you cannot be certain as to the tax rate. The error could occur where you choose a rate for the purpose of being able to 'save and verify'. If the verification failed and you required to speak to the contact, or in most cases wait for HMRC to add a subcontractor to the CIS scheme which is currently…

GST | Re-registering - Pick start date
Sometimes an entity will de-register for GST because they are no longer required to file, then circumstances change and they re-register. Currently in Xero when you re-register Xero creates all the prior period GST returns for when the client was deregistered. You then have to manually delete all the prior draft returns.
Would be great if you could have an option to choose the new start date for GST.
thanks!

Hybrid or Modified Cash Basis Reporting
Most of our clients (and I imagine many small businesses in the U.S.) use a hybrid reporting basis. Basically, short term assets and liabilities are recorded using the cash basis while long term assets and liabilities are recorded using the accrual basis.
Therefore, for example, this will result in sales being recorded when cash received but depreciation and amortization expense are recorded monthly. This method of reporting also results in the accounting basis being more similar to tax basis.Xero actually has a webpage describing this (https://www.xero.com/us/guides/cash-vs-accrual-accounting) but states "And if you run a hybrid accounting system, smart…

VAT - Partial Exemption Calculation
Ability to have a VAT partial exemption calculation.
Purpose: Because some industries (e.g. charity) have VAT partial exemption, having this ability would save users time in calculating the VAT.
51 votesHey everyone, appreciate that this idea's intent is to help save user's time in calculating the VAT, but I wanted to share that it is possible to record partial VAT exemptions, for those who aren't aware. We will continue to to track interest in this idea but in the meantime you can:
- Calculate your own your partial exemption adjustment amounts
- Enter them as VAT box adjustments on your non-MTD or MTD VAT return
Alternatively, if you use a set percentage adjustment you could do one of the following:
- Add a custom Tax Rate for your % rate.
- Adjust the VAT on each bill to the amount you can claim. Click the + next to the tax rate to do this. (You'll need to use the 'Amounts are' Tax Exclusive option to see it.)
We recommend you talk to your accounting advisor or HMRC if you need more help with this.

Business Activity Statement - Add item 7A to track deferred GST
Ability to add item 7A to track deferred GST
Purpose: Because many organisations import goods and defer GST.
19 votesHi everyone, thanks for the idea and support here. We appreciate all the valuable feedback and ideas shared regarding adding item 7A to the Business Activity Statement.
We understand that the ability to easily track deferred GST is crucial to your workflows.
Currently 7A on the BAS is a manual field, which does not update the figures on 1B. To adjust for this, we recommended the following workaround:
- Enter the original purchase as BAS Excluded.
- Once you have the Customs Entry form N10, you're entitled to claim a GST credit. Create a Bill with the value of the Deferred GST showing on the N10. Code this to your GST account (820 in the default Chart of Accounts) using the tax rate GST on Imports so that it shows separately in the Transactions by BAS field report and gets reported under 1B. You'll still need to manually add the Deferred GST…

Business Activity Statement - To automatically calculate Fuel Tax Credits
Ability to automatically calculate Fuel Tax Credits in the Business Activity Statement.
Purpose: It can save user’s time when calculating fuel tax credit, rather than doing it manually.
65 votesHi community, we appreciate the interest this idea has received. Sorry we haven't engaged with you on this idea sooner.
We understand being able to efficiently track and calculate fuel tax credits is important to you all who've supported this, however we want to be transparent that this isn't a feature we're looking to develop in the near future.
If you haven't already found a means to track this I wanted to share a method that could help. In Xero you could create untracked Inventory Items for each fuel type. When you enter purchases for fuel, you'd select the appropriate item, entering the number of litres into the Qty field, and the price per litre into the Unit Price field.
You could then use the Inventory Summary report to view the quantity of the fuel purchased during a date range.
If there are any changes around this we'll share with you…
