AU Payroll - Sort by Surname
To be able to sort Pay Employees by Surname and it holds them in that order instead of refreshing
Hiya community, thanks for your support in this. Totally get why you may want to set the default view to sort by surname in Payroll. Being open, with many of the teams resource working hard to fine tune payroll for STP phase 2 there are no direct plans for developing the option to set a default for sorting of employees atm.
To confirm, right now from your list of employees you can click on the column header to sort ascending or descending alphabetically - So, once on the screen you can click Last name to sort your employees by this column.
We'll update again if there's any change planned.

Very surprised that this feature is not available when you can sort and view the employee list that you cannot do the same when you do a payrun.
Can this be escalated as this has been a request from users for a number of years which surely highlights its importance.
It is causing a lot of negative feedback for your system, both for accounts and the payroll. -

The most basic function a system should have. Surely to goodness this needs addressing?!

@Sarah Mulqueen - but dont you love running a report of every payroll item for the month, exporting it to Excel, using Excel's features to find payroll items that are exempt from payroll tax, manually deleting them, and then using Excel's features to add up the figures for the month?
Oh wait ....... isn't that something that an "Accounting" package is meant to do?
Sorry! My bad! -

Extremely disappointed, Xero is meant to be a seamless program, but we can't sort Payroll by Surname which is the most illogical and outdated feature of the program.
A monthly Payroll tax report would be another feature that's required. -

Cannot report by surname, so sort is completely useless.
We have 3 Marys. They seem to report in order of hire date which is so dangerous when transferring data to other reports outside of Xero that are by surname. This is so illogical.

Xero says click this and click that .... hows about xero clicks this and clicks that and just fix this POS problem? OR even better, advise us all on who what the brainiac that came up with the idea of sorting by first name in the beginning, this is the single dumbest thing I've seen in Xero since coming over from another accounting package on july 1.

We would like Payroll to be sorted by Surname, to stop confusion. All other resources are filed by surname. By Xero having first name it creates extra work, to & fro ing.

Hi
Would you please work on function so you can permanently sort employees by surname. It is difficult using first name rather than surname. The above information is useless as keeps reverting to first name. Very out dated.

How does that help when you are running reports that only sort by first name? It is a completely useless feature.
It is such a simple request and yet you are unable to accommodate, how hard can it be?? -

UNBELIEVABLE!!! Obviously the software designers are NOT actually using Xero themselves. i.e. inputting data on a regular basis.
Pretty sure everyone knows you can sort where you mentioned BUT you can't flick through one employee after another - keeps reverting back to the First Name sort. It's so frustrating every time you do a report to export to Xero and then have to insert a column and change the entries to Surname first then delete the original Employee name column and then do a Data sort on the new column to get a working copy that matches every other database etc.
Utterly disappointed in this LACK of support for something that should NEVER had been an issue to begin with. -

This is about the least useful place to sort employees by last name. It is no kind of solution to be able to change the sort order on one screen (and you have to do it every single time you make any minor change or leave the screen). This option doesn't work for reports (results in many extra steps to correct the reports), doesn't functionally work when processing a payroll by using the save & next option and for bank payment reports even sorting by first name would be an improvement (is currently random). Xero is missing many very minor things that users prior to using Xero would not assume would be an issue as nobody else would even contemplate that software programmers would think this was good. It isn't that last name should be set as a default view (having experienced Xero, I would never presume that any flexibility would be added) it should be the main setting for sorting for everything. It is so frustrating that the software does not do this. Xero ignoring ideas, makes me think you have an 'ideas' section for show and to reduce formal complaints.

Very disappointing that Xero have chosen to ignore this request from so many people....

Yeah - we all know that already... the problem is that it keeps defaulting back to sort by First Name so you have to keep clicking the Surname header to get the list back into Surname order ... it is VERY frustrating and time consuming having to re-sort the list every time you do something... why can't you just give the option to have surname shown in the first column and default back to that each time instead of First Name... it's pretty standard practice...!

Pretty sure we're all aware of being able to "sort", however it always reverts back to christian name when you've finished the particular screen you're on, or whenever a screen/page is refreshed, so still not achieving what we need this software to achieve!! Nowhere else and no other software automatically sorts by christian name, so why is it so difficult for Xero to fix this issue ??

Sure you can sort it, in one window, but you can't work inside the payroll run in surname order by using the "Next" function after updating someones timesheet record for the payrun. It just defaults back to First name.

My CRM software that records hours is sorted by surname and it would make payroll far more efficient if xero did the same!

It creates less confuison if in surname order

I am astonished that we have to even be voting on this!!!
I thought it was a common sense fix

Super annoying we cannot do this!

It is a real pain that Xero lists employee names alphabetically by Christian names when the rest of the world does it by surname, including ATO. It is a complete nuisance.
