Navigation - Return to previous screen after viewing/editing a transaction
Ability to return to the previous screen after the user edited a transaction.
Purpose: To make users easily continue working on the previous page rather than having to navigate from the different page again.
Hi everyone, thanks for all your support and feedback of how changes in navigation could help your use of Xero. While not across all areas of the product there are some updates in Bills that we wanted to share and may help the needs of some in the idea here.
We've launched Bills quick view where there's now an eye icon within the line of the bills list. From here you'll find more ease in viewing, and more recently being able to edit bills from this view without having to leave the list, meaning you can simply make adjustments and move from one bill to the next.
We'll continue to explore and develop solutions like this to help our customers get more out of Xero on the go. I'll keep you informed of other updates that could enhance your experience, here.

This seems like a simple thing to change. It's time consuming and frustrating to edit and save a transaction and then have to click back through three different screens to get back to the original screen you were in.

It would be helpful when you look invoices or bills, you could go back where you were not start of the page.
Sometimes when projects take months to complete or client comes back requiring information of their product years later. So when looking 1 bill from supplier and you might have to open one by one. Then when you go back Xero takes you to the start of the page and you need to go and find again where you were. This can take so much time. -

Wasn't Bills Quick View launched nealry a year ago, in August 2024 according to the Xero blog? It doesn't address the navigation issue anyway.

Whenever you go and look at an invoice (maybe an adjustment or checking details) then close it, it then goes to a completely different screen not where you were before. at least go back to the previous screen you started at.
If you are in contact list for instant and you open an invoice under that contact then close again it does not go back to the contact list it goes to some other random spot, WHY? -

When you unmark a PO as billed, keep the screen in the PO and not automatically load the master PO screen

Currently, if you go to create a new credit note to either an invoice or bill, then click cancel, it will take you to the draft page. This makes no sense. I'm aware I could just click back on the webpage but I see no reason why "cancel" wouldn't just take you back to the invoice/bill you were editing. Often I've accidentally clicked it, or started to enter info but realised I forgot to get something I needed from the bill, so I almost always want to go back to that invoice/bill.

It would be nice, when in a contact and drilling into a specific transaction, that when you come out of that transaction you go back to the contact that you were viewing not the main purchase or sales section of Xero.

If you accidentally click on 'Approve and Email' instead of 'Save and Close', and then you go back, using the back button, to redo, the invoice you created is lost and you have to start over. This is time-consuming and annoying. Please amend so the back button puts you back to where you were, as it does in numerous other circumstances.

When trying to do a VAT (Sales Tax) return sometimes the transactions need to be edited with the correct tax rate, the screen should return to the report after the transaction is edited not to a list of transactions elsewhere.

Morning,
i have workaround for this.
However would still appreciate xero to enhance the feature letting user go back to their original page after doing the editing,
eg, Edit the bills reference from PO number (serve as GRN goods received), to invoice number (when invoice received by finance dept).
After edit the reference and check the tax for the inv is correct, click "update", the screen will go back to the page "bills to pay".The following is my current work around for the above. I booked mark the "bills to pay" page, so whenever i click the book mark, it will direct me to the page.
Hope this helps those who are still searching for the solutions.

OMG YES!!!!
So frustrating when you run a report & click/open a transaction to look at or make a change to & then when its done it doesn't take you back to the report you ran ..... no .... it takes you back to the bank account or somewhere else totally irrelevant ?? So then you have to waste your time with multiple clicks etc to get back to where you were & run the report again etc.Software is supposed to save you time not add extra steps to the workload.

Xero Files- When uploading Bills from Files it is extremely time consuming to have to go back into files to repeat. Within the Create a Bill Window if the Green Approve Button Dropdown had an option to Approve and return to files it would be a lot smoother and time efficient

I would be interested in the answer to this too. I and some of my larger clients have moved to QuickBooks Online having originally come to Xero from QB Desktop when it ceased in 2022. QBO are improving hugely, during the last 8 months functionality has increased. I see no such attempt by Xero to accommodate the needs for growing or medium businesses. It's still great for start ups or very small businesses.

I wish I had this insight before switching over to XERO from quickbooks online. I was advised there will be improvements by switching to XERO, now I know the advice was likely from someone that has only used another software briefly, not being able to thoroughly compare. I often review transactions per client, and each time I close an invoice, I have to start from the beginning, search client and then their transaction history. Many aspects of analytical or corrective work where you need to be in the same space for multiple actions, you have to start from the beginning. Frustrating to do, when you have volumes of transactions to go through. But if I am missing something, please share so I can improve my knowledge to make optimal use of XERO. Also, is there any insight or response from the XERO team on this subject?

Yes please allow the user to return to the previous screen after the user edited a transaction.

Xero should return you to the place that you were in a report, after clicking thorough to view a transaction. It wastes time to be returned to the main report menu rather than where you were in the report being viewed.

When doing year end accounts or indeed just checking all nominal codes, when I click into a transaction to amend, and then try and go back, it takes me to the original 'Account Transactions' screen and loses all my filters which is making the process ridiculously long.
Surely this is a basic functionality issue and / or a bug -

I totally agree. I and my clients went to Xero April 2022 because QuickBooks Desktop was ceasing. I'm seeing nothing from Xero to suggest that they are even listening to our issues. QuickBooks Online has got it's act together and there are almost daily improvements, they are listening and also reply to posts in the community. I think Xero having had a decent start thinks their job is done. It isn't, professionals cannot deal with the time wasted with the issues. Please read the attached - it is only a start - it is a list of issues I have found to date. I and 2 of my clients have gone to QuickBooks Online, we really cannot cope with the frustration. My clients remaining with Xero have limited daily processing. Good software for start ups too much time wasted during daily use for established professionals or SMEs.

I find it astounding that this hasn't been fixed 17 months after it was reported by the Xero Team and 13 months after I reported it. It's so gobsmackingly stupid ... Perhaps we're barking up the wrong tree? It's not simply a 'nice-to-have-Idea', it's a ******* Bug!! Let's all report it as a bug (which it is!)
I'm preparing to leave Xero in my personal business; unfortunately I need to struggle on with it for my main job.

I must express my frustration and annoyance with the current navigation system in Xero. The constant need to navigate back to the original page is not only time-consuming but also unnecessary. This repetitive action significantly hampers the overall experience of working with Xero.
I believe that Xero has the potential to be an exceptional software solution. However, the current functionality issue regarding navigation significantly detracts from its overall usability. I hope that Xero takes this feedback into consideration and makes the necessary improvements to enhance the user-friendliness of their software.
