New Workpapers - Create custom design workpapers
The ability to create and edit our own workpaper to add to the pack (like what we could do in the old workpapers)
Thanks to everyone who's shared feedback here. Over time, the conversation has broadened from the original request: the ability to create custom-designed workpapers, similar to Classic Workpapers, with tailored calculation rows, sections and mapped account codes.
This is something we're actively exploring and will share another update soon. We’ll use this idea to track that broader customisation capability.
Requests for specific worksheets are best tracked separately:
- Inter-entity loan workpapers
- Division 7A loans
- Motor vehicle private use and FBT
- Franking credits - add payment dates
- Investment income
- Profit appropriation/distribution
Tracking these separately helps us understand interest, needs and use cases. Please make sure to add your vote to these if of interest, or start a new idea for a new one.

The workpaper plus packs are too rigid for our practice's needs. We require flexibility and customisation. For example, the ability to create a rental schedule, with JAX picking up the balances from supporting workpapers, flexibility to combine the different types of repairs and maintenance as well as a space for capital acquisition, calculation of net rent and then linking this workpaper to the various rental accounts. Some clients pay GST instalments and the GST worksheet proposed has no space for that. The proposed workpapers are also very entity specific, rather than catering to a client group

When adding a new workpaper to a pack it would be great if you could choose which packs you would like it added to. This would be helpful if you would like to workpaper to be used across the different entity types. saving time having to create it in each workpaper pack.

Thanks for the clarification! It’s great to see the direction Workpapers is heading. The ability to use tailored templates and import reports directly sounds especially useful for making compliance workflows more efficient. Looking forward to seeing what the team comes up with next!

this kind of flexibility is essential, not having home office workpapers renders workpapers pretty much unusable in my practice as i work with online businesses

I agree with all the below reasons. Also if the new workpapers are not going to include important NZ tax adjustments like Entertainment, Home Office and Private Use it makes the ability to create our own workpapers to fill this gap even more important.

Fringe Benefits Tax, Franking Accounts, Div7A Loans, I could go on all require a separate working paper, but where to put them? Creating our own working paper is the obvious choice.

Adding dedicated workpapers for Inter-Entity Loans, Wages, Div 7A, TPAR, Super Payable, BAS, and GST would definitely make the template suite far more complete and practical for everyday compliance and review work. These are common areas accountants regularly deal with, so having standardized workpapers could improve consistency, save time, and reduce review issues. I agree with all comments. Flexibility of classis workpapers is what made it so good to use. Essential to have that flexibility with new workpapers

We have different template requirements for different jobs ie. core clients, charities, xero set ups/conversions etc. Can this be done?

Absolutely critical as we will have different requirements for different businesses and jobs too

Same as what Chris said below - the workpapers can't be a solution for only one specific style of business - needs to be able to be tailored properly

Need to create our own workpapers for things like Quality Assurance and NZ companies office which don't sync through to Xero but need to be completed as part of the job process.

100% Agree with all previous comments here. New Workpapers look nice, but are simply not practical for my practice until this is an option.

New workpapers is unusable without this feature. Also, there is no ability to send queries to the client - which makes it even more unusable. We will not spend any more time looking at this, or could not even contemplate using this in our practice without both of these features.

I agree. I have done this extensively in the classic workpapers to fit our workflows.

As per Fancisca's comment, without this functionality the new Workpapers feels largely unusable.
There are a lot of aspects which we have custom templates set up for in the Classic Workpapers which in the new system, we would need to spend time doing manually elsewhere and would need to attach into the notes section. This isn't ideal and the extra time spent doing that defeats the object of the Workpapers in the first place.

This functionality is really important. It makes your product to ridged without it.
This needs to be available in the individual workpaper as well as the Practice templates. -

It would be good to have the custom workpapers (favourite's in classic workpapers). We have a lot of custom workpapers in our workflow and this is stopping us from moving across tot he new workpapers.
