AU Payroll - Assign multiple tracking categories to pay items
Create the ability to allocate payroll items (eg Wages & Super) to multiple sets of tracking categories within payroll.
The only way that wages can be allocated to tracking categories is via timesheets or Journals (and only one set of tracking categories is able to be included in the timesheet).
This would be really helpful for many NFP's who require the ability to use two sets of tracking categories for all their expenses including Wages & Super (One set of tracking categories for departments and another for funding sources/grants).
Heya team, thanks for all your input here. We hear you, and understand that being able to assign multiple tracking categories to pay items would improve your reporting capabilities, and simplify tracking costs for various projects, locations, or departments.
For now, we’d suggest using manual journals to split and reallocate payroll costs after a pay run. Alternatively as some have shared, you could create specific pay items for each tracking category combination, although we recognise this may not be suitable for all.
While this isn’t in our plans at this stage we understand the rationale here and will consider how tracking works within payroll closely as we continue to develop our roadmap.
If there are any changes or news for tracking in payroll we’ll be sure to update you of this here.

Xero currently only allows individual employees to be assigned by one particular employee group under Employment in Employees for cost tracking purpose.
It is fairly common now that employees work across different departments in the organisation and it makes more sense if Xero enables more tracking categories to be assigned not under employees but in the actual pay run. This function shouldn't be limited to projects only. In MYOB, you are able to do so by assigning jobs to wage, tax and super when processing pay runs for all subscribers with payroll function.

When an employee works for multiple tracking categories within the business... Now, there is only one category that we can apply to in an employee card...however, sometimes, they work for more "tracking categories" ..it would be handy if we could select more category options while processing pay runs..

Yes very time consuming when doing big payrolls, we have to then go and do a manual journal for all allowances, super, leave for everything we can't code on timesheets.
Would be great to be able to set this up on their templates with the option of being able to split out the coding also so if an employee was working on several jobs.

100% agree - this is really important. the only way to do this at the moment is with manual Journals which is tedious, time-consuming and error prone!
No idea why it wouldn't be there as standard if 2 Tracking codes are available on all the other transactions.

As Xero does not provide multiple tracking categories to be linked to timesheet, I have to reverse the payroll journal and enter the GL with the job code. It is really time consuming by re-allocating the job code to each employee's pay, just like manually redoing the payroll.
