Hi everyone, we appreciate wanting more control of which users have access to manual journals.
As you may have seen we've recently released new reporting permissions so you can grant access to Sales Reports or Purchase Reports only, without opening the full Reporting Centre.
At this stage we don't have plans for developing an incremental permission for Manual Journals, however we're continuing to keep a close eye on ideas in the these forums as our permissions journey evolves. I'll be sure to update if there's any news.

Thanks for raising this idea, Sarah. Being able to print or download a specific tax schedule as a standalone document could make managing working papers more straightforward.
We’ve moved this idea to Gaining Support so we can continue gathering feedback. Add your vote and let us know which schedules or worksheets you’d find most useful.

Rearrange the Reporting menu sections:
Section 1: All Reports, Custom, Advisor, Drafts, Published, Archived
Section 2: Favourites
Section 3: Reporting Settings
Then have a separate menu dropdown for Analytics - then move the current Analytics, Short-term cash flow + Business snapshot items onto the new menu
Then within the All reports page, have a menu in the side panel to navigate to each reporting section (make all report sections visible in the pane) - e.g. payroll, tax, financial, etc. The whole page could do with a rework, the report grouping is a little cumbersome...please can Fixed Assets reporting have its own section?! -

I'm excited to share a major update that addresses this feedback directly. At Xerocon in September 2025, we announced a new strategic partnership with BGL, a leader in compliance and practice software. Together, we are building a new, deeply integrated Workpapers solution that will be embedded directly within Xero Practice Manager (XPM) and Xero Tax. This new solution is central to our compliance and practice tools roadmap and is designed to provide a seamless experience, leveraging BGL’s expertise in document management. We are pleased to confirm that the ability to add, rename, and reorder supporting documents is a key feature of this new BGL-powered Workpapers solution. This functionality is already available in BGL’s core product, which forms the foundation of our new offering. This means you'll soon have the flexibility to organize your documents as you work, without the frustrating workarounds you've mentioned. The new solution will also enable direct data…

Hi Rebecca, thank you for this valuable feedback on user access in Workpapers.
We can certainly see your point. The current 'Standard' and 'Admin' levels can be too broad, often requiring you to give staff higher access than necessary just to perform routine tasks like setting up a new workpaper file.
Your suggestion to introduce more refined user roles that better reflect the actual work your staff are involved in is a great solution to improve both workflow and security.
We're grateful for your engagement and for letting us know the changes that matter to you. We've reviewed your idea and now it can gain support from other community members. Along with votes, others can now comment to share additional detail about how more granular user roles could improve their practice's efficiency.🙂

Hi team, we really appreciate the feedback from you here and the issues for Reviewers that you've raised. We've made some recent changes and are really keen to hear if these improvements have solved for your needs.
Now;
- when using the arrow keys in the top right to navigate between worksheets, those marked as Not applicable are now automatically skipped
- When viewing attachments, you can use the arrow key button at the bottom of the attachment to move between files (screenshot below)
Let us know if these changes have been of benefit!

Hi Rebecca, thanks for this great idea about centralising user management for Workpapers.
We understand that having to manage staff access separately in Workpapers instead of in one central place like XPM or Xero HQ creates extra administrative work. Your suggestion to integrate Workpapers user management so you can control all practice staff access from a single location makes perfect sense.
We're grateful for your engagement and for letting us know the changes that matter to you. We've reviewed your idea and now it can gain support from other community members.
Along with votes, others can now comment to share additional detail about how this feature could improve their practice's efficiency and user management workflow.

Since the update to user permissions, Standard users now by default have access to create and edit journals. Most of our client base do not and should not have access to adding/editing journals therefore were set up with Standard user permission. This is going to be a huge job to review and update the permissions for these clients.
Xero should have kept existing permissions for all users, then we could review and expand permission for users on a case by case basis.
Further, it seems that you cannot remove journal access without also removing BAS/tax permission. WHY?!!
Please allow us to pick & choose - many clients can and should be lodging their own BAS, but for various reasons should not have journal access. Please review and fix!
