Hi everyone, appreciate your continued feedback on new invoicing. As mentioned in my last update we've now added a new Xero Central page for new invoicing.
Along with updates to individual ideas on Xero Product Ideas, this page will become the single source of truth for key feature rollouts including:
- what’s available in new invoicing right now,
- timelines for features and enhancements going live in new invoicing, as well as
- a comparison table between the classic and newer versions of invoicing.
We'll be updating this page regularly.
Relating to some of the more recent feedback there are some existing ideas that may also be of particular interest that you can join, like the ability to see the email the invoice was sent to in the history, or being able to see a timestamp, and reducing clicks and steps.

Hello, I understand that the new invoicing now has a character limit on the invoice reference. This is a problem as we have products where the reference is much longer. At the moment we are going around it by switching back to classic invoicing, however I know this function will be removed in November, in which case we won't be able to fit the correct reference numbers. Please could you fix this or let us know how we can continue including our references?

The new invoicing makes uploading files so much more difficult. You cannot simply drag a file, you need to open an upload box first. Very clunky.

It's staggering to think that Xero are about to push such as half-arsed and incomplete format on their customers.
If you told me that the 'new invoicing' was how Xero looked back in it's early days and the 'classic invoicing' is how it looked now, I'd believe you. But to see it go backwards in so many ways and with so much negative community feedback, I'm just gobsmacked.

New invoicing is clunky and oversized. It does not function as smoothly as the classic invoicing and the whole layout of the page is changed. The full data of an invoice now needs a left to right scroll (WHY?) and pretty much whatever was at the top is at the bottom and vice versa. Payment application is now less efficient with clicks into the add payment when it was just available at the bottom with tab/text write over capability. Why are we moving backwards in the features and not able to tab/type anything here? Also the add payment bubble now covers account numbers so if you need to offset something, open yet another screen to look over the invoice data while you complete entries. Adding a payment also now dumps you in the paid screen where the classic invoicing put you back in awaiting payment and was great because that's where most people working the file need to go next. I know I added a payment, now I need to add a payment to the next invoice not click back into the old paid one again. In addition to all that, you can't just drag drop attachments anymore...more clicks.
A lot of people are just using classic invoicing until time runs up and these issues on the front end are going to multiply exponentially as people who are already adverse to transitioning are forced to. Time is a commodity in this job, and the inefficiency/full overhaul of this page makes it feel like a different software, not just a Xero update. I hope you hear us on this because right now, this is the most unappealing update I have worked with in my experience with the platform. -

Like my Dad always said, "if it ain't broke, don't fix it".
The new invoicing is so hard to read.
Please keep the Classic version, Please -

I agree with many comments below
The new invoicing system is adding so much time to my accounting its absolutely ridiculous.Like many comments below the sheer amount of extra clicks and things to do even basic functions that where smooth and easy has caused me to stop recommending Xero to other business owners.
some features that would be fantastic to be added or smoothened out
-- When adding a new item while creating an new invoice let that item show up strait away , Currently have to type it all in again to find it
-- Finding the new invoicing so painfully slow to load its causing me to nearly abandon the computer entirely due to the time lost
-- Keep the old invoicing lay out as this new scaling for one is terriblelike many have said Keep the old version as it works, this new one is not the solution to so many peoples work flow and time management as currently Xero isnt helping us safe time its robbing us of time due to their bad decisions in the new (( not Improved )) version

The new invoicing system is so terrible I'm considering switching to Quickbooks Online. I cannot believe how AWFUL this new UI is. It's complete hot garbage and it making my workflow so painful. There is literally ZERO improvements over the old UI. Please bring back the Old Invoicing system or at least give us the option to go back.

I agree. Some things can be done quicker using the "old" invoice. The invoice is now new, but the bill still old...
On top of this I hate the new 'approve and email' button which is default.
I really don't want to email it. This should be configurable. -

Keep old invoice format - I understand that there may have been a requirement to update the old invoice format and maybe add new features.
Why could these changes not just be added to the old format.
The new format just looks like a dump of information on the page. Why are there no lines to separate the information (as in the old format).
To do simple things like copy an old invoice are now not as easy to do as before.
We have a number of clients now threatening to leave Xero due to the new invoice format. -

Using the new invoicing, when emailing a PDF invoice the grey background comes along with the email. We use this email to send to customers, now we have to click more buttons to turn the background back to white. Pleaes remove the grey background or have an option to set the background colour.

And I just noticed that 'the unicorn feature' with 30 votes was implemented (https://productideas.xero.com/forums/939198-for-small-businesses/suggestions/47695445-invoicing-add-the-unicorn-easter-egg-to-new-in#comments) And the ask for the fix of proper tracking features .... 'still working on it' ...
Great sense of priorities.
Hope you got a laugh out of it. -

@Bec Jones, @Claire Parker ... .couldn't agree more.
Are we certain anybody is reading these submissions, though?
This topic "Keep Classic Invoicing" is marked as 'not planned'.Maybe the subscription refund requires a new entry in the 'product ideas' forum .

!! DO NOT TURN OFF THE CLASSIC INVOICING !!
the new version does not work properly and is not wanted -

Bec Jones nailed it. All of this and more.
New Invoicing is broken and currently unusable. Please can we get a 50% subscription refund as we are only getting half an accounting platform that is workable? God help us all if they even think about touching AP. -

I have a list and I don't think this even covers the amount of issues with this new invoicing system and the errors being made. Maybe push out the retirement date of the classic or don't retire it at all and let everyone make their own decision which version works best for them. Let the paying customer decide. Maybe fix the issues on the current version instead of bringing out a new clunky system that has many more issues.
Drag and drop - I upload multiple supporting docs to each invoice and I now have to click on files and drag it to the small box and half the time that box disappears before I get time to drag the documents.
Too many extra clicks on everything.
Account Codes not coming up for certain products.
Can't add additional (multiple lines by using the add lines button)
Harder to read
Can't see the full names of the tracking codes. I have multiple with slight differences and I can't glance through at the end to check it's all coded to the correct tracking code.
If a mistake in entering client name 'To' it adds it as a new client immediately and then you have to go through contacts to delete.
To change the date of the invoice you have to highlight it to type the correct address or use the drop down box. Due date is highlighted if you need to change it.
Extra tabs to get down to the items/descriptions etc.
It is much harder to find the product you want in the items column. It's too hard to read and large. Make it more uniform on single lines like the classic version.
Tabbing onto the delete icon/column at the end too many times I've accidently deleted the lines. If I want to delete it I'll click on that at the end. Don't have it as a tab.
Approve and email. Many of our clients don't receive the invoice immediately. They are set up in advance. It's again extra clicks I don't need. Then you hit it and have to click again to send the invoice anyway.
The whole system is slow.
I have switched back to the classic version and now EVERY 24 HOURS it switches me back. I'm not interested in the new system AT ALL!!
XERO - MAYBE GET YOUR ACCOUNTS DEPARTMENT TO TRIAL IT AND LET US KNOW WHAT THEY THINK?? I do not want to use this new version until it's more user friendly for the people that actually use it. -

I’ve been told by a Xero support specialist that new invoicing is to "build consistency between Xero experiences, allowing us to update and add new features easier than before. These changes are critical in delivering ease of use and value.
We've listened to customer feedback, and have made changes to parts of new invoicing. We’ll continue to do so in order to prioritise future improvements."
I don’t feel Xero design team, that you really have listened to your customer feedback. The overwhelming consensus seems to be to leave classic invoicing as it is, it’s far superior to your new version.
I've tried the new version again (yesterday) it's no better than the last time I tried.
* I copy a previous invoice and get asked if it's for the same organisation and have to click that it is.
Yes it is for the same company, that's why I'm copying it.
Why add an extra click? Surely if I wanted to change the organisation I'm sending the invoice to it's simple enough to do afterwards?*The new page is too wide for a laptop screen. I can't see the descriptions box AND the amount box at the same time. I have to scroll left and right to check them. This is a waste of time and annoying.
*The boxes are so enormous I can't see the tax rate. I can just see a tiny weird sliver of the % sign and then (VAT on income) in huge letters. This is totally unnecessary.
* Trying to add more invoice lines is a mess. I eventually realised I click the enter key to add a new line. It works but it makes the line I'm sitting in much deeper.
I’m already having trouble seeing the whole of my invoice. And yes, I've discovered I can reduce the size of the line by clicking backspace. Lucky me. Yet more time spent pointlessly clicking.
How is this progress or streamlining? The only consistency the new version is building in me is annoyance.
I don’t know who designed the new version but I feel it’s done by people who don’t spend large parts of their month actually creating and sending out invoices. If they did, I suspect they’d realise, the classic version is better. Please leave it.
