Practice tools | Clients - Show indicator for number of notes & tax returns
Following the XPM updates in November and December 2025, the Tax Returns and Notes tabs no longer indicate whether a client has any open tax returns or existing notes.
This indicator was previously used to quickly identify active items on a client without needing to open each tab, we are particularly missing the notes indicator.
As similar indicators are still shown for Jobs and Invoices, it would be helpful for consistency and usability if this functionality could be restored for the Tax Returns and Notes tabs as well.
Hi everyone, thanks for your feedback on this. We appreciate you sharing how the number indicators for Tax Returns and Notes helped streamline your workflow in XPM.
We've reviewed your idea and now it's up to the community to get behind and support it. Make sure you share your idea with any colleagues that this could benefit so they can add their vote too!

We rely on the numbers of notes being shown, as we record critical notes under our parent groups to ensure our clients needs are met to our best ability e.g specific email addresses for specific companies within client groups etc etc. We rely on this feature heavily within our practice to ensure our admin staff are all on the same boat whilst communicating with our clients. Especially those clients with a large number of entities that may have different contact details or requirements. Please bring this feature back.

The indicators for notes and tax returns are crucial to ensuring we support our clients efficiently and do not miss any important information. Without these indicators, additional time is required, negatively affecting workflow and time management. Notes indicator is something we heavily rely on in our businesses workflow.

It is really important to see that there are notes in the area. When I see no number, I do not think there are any notes to check. Bring back the number of notes in the file please.

The number of notes needs to be displayed as it was prior to the update. Plus the an indicator to show returns being worked on.

Absolutely! There is no point adding a note if you can't tell it's there...
Plus - it was there before, so why has this feature disappeared?

Can you add back a total number next to Tax Returns for clients as is showing for jobs and invoices - We often view client records to see if any tax returns have previously been prepared to identify if they are existing or new - The new interface doesnt include this any longer and so this quick check isnt as quick any longer

Show number of tax returns currently open on the Client Profile. This used to be a feature until the recent update. We can see the number of Jobs, Quotes, and Invoices, but not Tax Returns unless you click on the tab.

In the old xero version, when you clicked on a client you could see a number next to "tax returns" for that entity. Now you have to click on the group to view, then click on Tax Returns to see who as an active tax return/activity statement.
It would be helpful, that when you open a client, you can see if there are any active returns without having to click on "Tax Return"
The new top toolbar, shows Active Jobs, but need it to show active Tax Returns.
