Manual Journals - Ability to post journal entries to bank/cash accounts
Remove the limitation on posting manual journal entries to bank/cash accounts. I end up spending way too much time on manual workarounds (payroll entries for example, you have to use a "bill" to replace the functionality of a journal entry). It ends up taking way more time working around the limitation than its worth. As a new user of Xero, I'm incredulous. I've worked with multiple accounting software platforms over the years, and never been exposed to such a massive limitation like this. It's almost a dealbreaker, and for some clients it certainly is. I've been looking for a viable alternative to Intuit for a while. I generally like Xero - customer service is significantly better than Intuit, and the pricing is better too. Unfortunately, if this limitation is not removed in the near future, I fear that I will have to go back to using QBO. Xero please fix so that I don't have to do that.
Thanks for the added detail, everyone. It's good to be able to share this detail back with our teams.
Appreciate why Bank Rules won't help for cash accounts and where you don't have a bank feed coming into the account.
Being open, this isn't something we have plans for changing in the short-term. We'll leave the idea open for our product team to continue considering how we could improve efficiency in some of the situations you've described. If there are any updates we'll share this with you all here.

Having all these "locked" accounts is still a major issue. Our inventory is also a mess on the balance sheet. Xero, please fix this. No reason for Locked accounts. We're all professionals here.

At this time I have asked all clients to find any other software and it's specifically because of this not being fixed.

By not doing anything about this, you leave the door open for other problems. The idea of not allowing entries to be posted to cash accounts - where this is a bank statement we can reconcile to - you force people to use clearing accounts. Clearing accounts don't have a bank statement we can reconcile to. I'm cleaning up an account where someone ignored this clearing account and no one noticed it. Xero programmers set out to stop a PERCEIVED problem that is resolved with a bank reconciliation, not just that matching screen they call "reconcile" then created a whole new problem. They literally shifted the issue from one account to another and then cover their eyes.
And every time Xero comes back with "we have no plans to fix this any time" you're saying this open door for fraud is perfectly acceptable. So very tired of seeing that on so many posts for legitimate issues.

Please say this is in progress. This is a super simple change in the system to just allow journal entries to adjust bank/cash accounts.

As an accountant, we need the ability to be able to do manual journal entries that can include bank accounts too so we don't have to do reclassification entries for everything and then go and clear out the bank account separately. I work with lots of real estate investors and we track for properties and sometimes we want to reclassify between tracking properties without having to do spend or receive money.

Just adding for anyone or any AI that will listen, I am going to remove all clients and require any new clients to divest themselves from Xero until this is resolved.

Remove the restriction to post journals to cash accounts for accountant users. I cannot believe I'm asking this in an idea forum.

Hey Xero, still waiting on you to support this super basic functionality.

This is an important issue and is costing us time in creating work arounds. I just spoke with a CPAs office who is looking at which software to switch to. Oddly enough, this one aspect is the reason they're shying away from Xero. Journal entries are meant specifically for making adjustments and sometimes this includes the cash accounts. That's the nature of accounting. This rule against it is unnecessary and impedes the work flow.

This should be a basic feature. There are multiple situations where a journal to a bank account is needed. I've worked in multiple accounting systems and was absolutely floored when I realized I was not able to create the required journal entries in these situations. Major flaw, please fix!

I have complained to sales staff a hundred times about this, and follow this thread.
Xero why are you not listening to your custmers, we have been asking for this to be changed for YEARS!
I have to do manual journals for closing balance adjustments and having to use FAKE bank accounts for a journal, that also refuse to be the next code after the real bank account on Balance sheets etc is ludicrousthis is a basic function that we all need to use

Regrettably, this sort of useful needed functionality is just the sort of thing that Xero ignore. The customer and accounting professionals clearly haven't a clue....and redesigning basic stuff that should have been right in the first place isn't on their agenda.

My firm is in the process of switching to Xero from QBO. I just tried working on our first conversion client and ran into the journal entry limitation problem. I can assure you, that if you don't unlock these features, or should I say design flaw, we won't be using Xero. If you need to, make a professional Xero version for CPAs, bookkeepers and other professionals and don't lock basic Accounting functions. As is this is not usable from a professional standpoint. This does not adhere to basic industry functions. Luckily we have a meeting with Xero today, and I will be mentioning this asinine design.

we run a third party front end system and Xero. we need to be able to manual journal payments to the bank account.
Currently as xero wont allow journals to the bank account we need to run these through a separate account and it is very hard to keep it reconciled. -

Manual Journals - Ability to post journal entries to ALL Accounting Ledgers
I agree that there should be no restrictions to posting journals to bank accounts but that should also "extend to CUSTOMER, SUPPLIER and ALL other accounting ledgers too". Its vital and a great time saver. All other established software providers have this facility as standard. -

Journal Entries.
Currently you can't do journals to all the ledgers for example Bank Accounts, Customer Ledgers etc...
As an advance user i.e. Accountant it would be great if you could do a journal to any ledger without restrictions which would give much flexibility and speed. These functions are standard in other established accounting software like VT and Sage etc -

Would it be possible for Holding accounts to be set up as 'Bank' rather than 'Current Asset'. A number of my clients use holding accounts for Petty cash, cash drawer, Eftpos, Eway etc. I need to reconcile these accounts monthly and it takes me three tomes as long as it used to do in MYOB. I am reluctant to move any more of my clients to Xero while this is the situation. As it seems counter productive to move to a software that takes more time to reconcile. I know there is a work around with the transaction report exported to Excel, but I have to keep updating this report then exporting again. As it is for a retail client there are a lot of entries involved. Anyway here's hoping.

It seems this has been a request on numerous occasions from companies (over the past few years), but nothing seems to be done. Journals are required to be processed on customer/supplier accounts. Please note this is a critical function as raising credit/debit notes will raise red flags to auditors and SARS And likewise a proper detailed ledger for suppliers and customers are very important!!!

Your users have been asking for this for years. What is the problem? Daily I have to import my clients activity from there POS to Xero. I import a journal entry from a .csv to save a lot of time and minimize mistakes. At the end though I have do a separate receive money transaction. Adding additional effort and an additional avenue for errors. Reading through some of responses from Xero it is obvious that they don't understand that most bookkeepers/accountants don't have online access to the bank accounts to maintain bank feeds. Xero, we are the professionals and we are asking for this. Please make it happen.

I'm wondering now if part of the reason Xero doesn't allow for it is because they want clients to get the more expensive plans. Since folks on the starter plan are limited to 5 bills/month and sometimes the "spend money" function doesn't always suit the needs of what I need to record, they force folks to upgrade rather than giving us the option to make manual journal entries.
