Product grouping is extreme important, as we deals in contact lenses.

example:

Biotrue have different powers
-1.50 = 5 boxes
-2.50 = 7 boxes
-4.00 = 3 boxes

total will be 15 boxes

individual code can be

GROUP UNDER "BT"
BT0150 = 5 boxes
BT0250 = 7 boxes
BT0400 = 3 boxes
Thus, BT will have 15 boxes.

Perhaps tags would also work? This way you could have multiple tags that you could filter by.

Couldn't agree more with this suggestion! Currently migrating from the horrors of QuickBooks Online (@#!$) over to Xero.

QuickBooks has Categories for products and services. Those Categories allow a business to group items--and even to nest Categories as Sub-Categories. So useful!

We run a livestock farm that has almost 800 meat/honey/egg products. A Product is unique on the basis of its size or format. Products need to be organized by whether it's a pork, chicken, sheep, turkey, honey, or egg product type.

I could run this kind of product classification/granularity in QBO, but there's nothing like this in Xero. See attached screenshots.

Please add product groupings/categories to Xero!! Our business needs this urgently.

For anyone following this thread — we ran into the same limitation in Xero around not being able to hide or group line items to simplify our invoices to clients, so we built a tool to work around it called Invoice Polish

The web app reads your existing invoices and lets you group or summarise line items (manually or automatically), preview a cleaner client-facing version, export it as a PDF, and optionally attach that PDF back onto the original invoice in Xero.

Important point: it doesn’t modify any accounting data in Xero. Your detailed line items stay exactly as they are for reporting, and this just creates a cleaner version for clients.

Typical workflow is: connect your Xero org, select an invoice, group/summarise the line items, then export or attach the revised version.

We’ve found it useful where you need detailed breakdowns internally but only want to present a high-level summary to clients.

Product grouping would be extremely helpful, this would align with our catalogues and Ecommerce platform

My workaround in the end was to start each Xero Item Code with a prefix for the product category. eg/ TEE_SHIRT_01 - where TEE is the category and the Item Code is SHIRT_01 .

I add my supplier code and supplier's part number to the purchase description. It won't show up on your invoices but helps if you want to filter down to all the products you buy from a particular supplier.

I have just migrated from Quickbooks to Xero and this is the one item I am amazed isn't already in Xero! We need to be able to group products.

The get-around "use the start of the product name as a tag" isn't really cutting it.

This is critical to our business. Our clients do not need to see a breakdown of every item used on every job, but we need to be able to track what products have been used where. I want to create an invoice using product codes that can then be grouped into a few combined line items on the client's version.

Although individual inventory transactions can be categorised there is currently no facility to categorise the 'items' themselves so that reports can be pulled on all items within a specific category. This would be really helpful. I know that there is a 'work-around' if such items relate to specific Contacts but this doesn't help in our circumstances

We can create custom filters for contacts, and there is a filter on products for active / archived items. I'm not a programmer but surely the functionality is already there, it would be easy for Xero to include product filtering.

Had I known that itemizing within a product or service was unsupported, I would not have subscribed. The client receiving the invoice does not require a breakdown of materials or consumables used on a project; however, I must maintain individual usage records for each item, which I may need to provide upon request. God forbid I have use quickbooks, but I have to find something else.

add a company name to products and services also add a percentage but for product sell price based on the cost price

Could not believe this wasn't possible when I started using Xero. This is pretty essential as we sell related services that we would normally group together and they are just different types of the same thing, at different price points.

I have used the software from 2 other major players that have this function. Xero is a far better product. If it had the ability to categorise/group services and products will make it much easier to and quicker to prepare quotes for jobs, or sub-contract invoicing to contractors for item that are similar in nature. Xero’s “Projects’ would also benefit from this functionality. It would be more economically efficient than having to rely on additional subscriptions to 3rd party ‘addon’ software for this one simple timesaving feature.

Need to be able to group Products and Services into categories and sub-categories. Sage Cloud Accounting has this function.

Need to be able to group items. Eg we purchase components from a supplier and assemble them into whole units. For forecasting we need to track the components sold so we can order them again. When you sell the whole unit xero does not allow you to see the break down of the components.
