Struggling with the fact that yesterday the Xero AI generated instructions showed that once an inventory item is set you can add a default tracking category to that inventory item.

I would appreciate Xero revisit this item as a matter of urgency. When volume increases it isn't feasible to manually add a tracking category for bills and sales invoices. Whilst default tracking categories can be set in contacts, this doesn't help when a contact has more than one inventory item with more than one tracking category.

I have come up with a workaround which will mean my using a single letter in the inventory code so the tracking category can be quickly allocated from this. However this means that all bills will have to go into draft instead of awaiting payment.

Anyone else got any good workarounds?

Additionally the tracking categories are such a godsend, I feel cheated I only have two. Is there a plan to increase these categories.?

Great to see this new feature, for it to be truely usable it would need to include the other inventory adjustment fields for Reference and tracking. Can these be added, please?

I find it disheartening to read that people have requested this feature since 2022 and it's still not an option.
Please add this feature, it makes total sense and would save a LOT of time.

This is quite unbelievable that it's not supported. I have to select two categories for every line on every invoice. Why on earth would you leave defaults out of items? It takes me twice as long to enter invoices.

Please add this, it's ruining what is a fantastic experience otherwise. Coming from Sage, I've really like Xero but this is so GAH!

Use case (which I thought would be very common): I use tracking for Design (a design that is used across multiple items such as magnets or postcards) and a Range (a piece of artwork that can have multiple designs).

My categories are all about items, yet items don't support it :(

Yes it would be very helpful to be able to select a tracking option against particular inventory items. It seems you can already categorise specific transactions for an item but not the item itself. To clarify we need all transactions for specific inventory items to default to a particular category.
Kelly's comment is interesting but unfortunately doesn't work for our purposes

When creating / editing new "Products and Services" please add the option to select a tracking category. When I was searching in help to see if it is possible to enable this feature the Xero AI gave direct instructions on how to do, except the software is not currently set up to do it. (see screenshot)

Have a couple of blank fields against each stock item so user can use them to record a category label, location etc.

When setting up products and services codes I would like to be able to add in tracking categories. this will make processing easier, and especially when using import files.

Just chiming in here to say this is actually critical for us. We're in the process of giving xero a serious try coming over from Quickbooks Online and while we're really liking it we truly need to have tracking categories possible to be set as default for a specific item. It's labor intensive, and error prone, to have to set them manually on every line item of every invoice right now.

We understand you can default a customer to one, but many of our customers partake in services delivered by different departments of our company. Allowing us to set a default department/tracking category on a per item basis would solve this, as items are unique per department at our company. Please implement asap! Very simple feature that would overcome one of the bigger hurdles we have with Xero at the moment.

The ability to use default tracking categories from inventory items would save me hours every month. Please make this an option

I'm working with a new client, a government agency, who has over 250 tracking items. It's INSANE that these cannot be added to items by default.

How many comments and votes does it take to get an idea to the development stage and implemented?
Adding tracking categories to item set-up for item inventory would save us SO much time and manual input. I find it really hard to believe that its not already there and that this hasn't yet been sorted.
Alternatively, having Xero 'guess' tracking categories for invoices in the same way it currently 'guesses' account codes based on frequent use would be a big step forward from current situation. We need to add two tracking category options to every line on each invoice so this adds up to a lot of time as some invoices have as many as 20 lines.

Had been keying invoices for a year with Xero, I believe default tracking options can save quite A LOT of time. Please consider and enable this function sooner.

Is it possible when setting up an item to have a fixed department code assigned. This is time consuming to always have to add this extra code when the item is tracked by both.

Warehouses for inventory items would be so huseful and make everything much easier. Please consider this.

We would love this feature. What is the progress on the development thereof?

I would like to see a feature to assign default tracking categories to Products and Services, in the same way that the default sales / purchase account and tax rate can be assigned at present. This would help with ease and consistency of invoicing by having the option for the tracking to pre-populate on sales invoices based on the Product / Service selected.

It should probably be an optional field as I can see there will be some businesses where the same Product would need different tracking assigned for each invoice, e.g. if using tracking for sales at different locations. I work with businesses that have use tracking for different departments / activities, and for them it would work well to have this feature as certain Products would only ever be sold by one specific department / activity area so the same tracking would be wanted every time for that Product.
